Divorce cakes

Cakes are synonymous with a celebration, so if you’re looking for ways to celebrate your divorce, buying a divorce cake can take your event from gathering to party. No one will ever object to being served cake, so here’s our guide to divorce cakes, including where to get one in the UK, how to decorate them, and what to put on your divorce cake.

Where to buy a divorce cake in the UK

It’s a bit annoying that when you search for ‘divorce cake’ in the UK, you often get results from Amazon, Walmart and random bakeries in New York. Clearly, the Americans know how to mark the end of a marriage, and we’re just catching up. But that doesn’t mean you can’t get a divorce cake in the UK. We’ve done our research, and here are a few of our favourites.

Burn-Away Break Up Cake - Anges de Sucre

A divorce cake with a photo of an ex on it

Anges de Sucre in London do a Burn-Away Break-Up Cake, £100. It's a brilliant piece of theatre for your divorce party, and it works like this: the top of the cake is an edible printed photograph - you send them one - and you light it. It burns away to reveal a message hidden underneath.

So you can, if you want, set fire to a picture of your ex in front of your friends and find "congratulations" written beneath. You can burn a wedding photo and have ‘a new era’ revealed beneath it. It’s up to you.

The practical bits: London and Surrey only, hand-delivered by their own drivers on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays between 9am and 5pm, further afield by arrangement. Sizes are 6" (serves 8), 8" (serves 14) and 10" (serves 21). Sponge and Swiss meringue buttercream, six flavours. You need at least a week's notice, and you have to email them a high-resolution photo within an hour of ordering or it holds up delivery.

Divorce Cake - Bailey’s The Bakers

Based in Glasgow, Bailey’s The Bakers offer a 16x12” divorce cake on a board. It features an image of a couple, next to an image of the same couple with one of them bursting out of the frame alongside the text ‘Problem Solved’. It costs £75 and is collection only. You’re able to customise the text. It’s a bit…on the nose and doesn’t have the same theatrical twist as the previous cake, but it does work for those who want to laugh at their current situation. You can also choose from a really mouth-watering selection of flavours.

The Break Up Cake - Oh My Cakery

For those who love a bit of gothic glamour, consider this spectacular two-tiered divorce cake from Oh My Cakery. Prices start from £85 and it would make an incredible centre piece at a divorce party. Complete with tongue-in-cheek ‘No-one liked your husband anyway’ icing (which you can customise, should you want to), this is a real show-stopper. There are a range of flavours available, and the cake is made to order and available to collect in Milton Keynes.

Custom divorce cakes

Any local bakery will make you one. "Divorce cake" isn't a technical term - it's a celebration cake with different words on it, and most bakers have done odder. If you feel awkward asking, you needn't: ask for a celebration cake and tell them what you want written.

Expect to pay roughly what you'd pay for a birthday cake of the same size. The £75–£100 range above is for a decorated, delivered, custom-printed cake. A simple iced sponge from a local baker will be considerably less.

What to write on a divorce cake

There are lots of different options when it comes to customising and deciding what to write on your divorce cake. Here are some suggestions, depending on the vibe you’re going for:

Kind, for when it was sad rather than satisfying

  • Here's to what's next

  • Chapter two

  • The beginning of the good bit

  • To you. Finally.

  • Onwards

Funny, for when you're genuinely fine

  • Congratulations on your excellent decision

  • Happily ever after

  • Thank you, next

  • I do. I did. I'm done.

  • She finally read the terms and conditions

  • Legally unbothered

  • RIP to my marriage

  • End of an error

  • Taking back her name

Rude, for when nothing else will do

  • Off you fuck then

  • Divorced AF

  • We never liked them anyway

  • S/he was a bit of a c**t

We could go one, but you probably don’t need too much inspo from us for a rude divorce cake… Just think about what it could look like if there are kids involved, or if you’re still on good terms with the same circle of friends, or if photos of it emerged to family some time later. You know your crowd.

Divorce cake design ideas

Wondering what to ask for when it comes to your divorce cake? Here are some ideas to inspire you:

  • The split cake - two halves, two flavours, two styles. Says the obvious thing without words.

  • The topper trick - any cake you like, but made divorce-y with a topper

  • The ring on top - a sugar ring, broken or whole. You could even use this moment to unveil a divorce ring.

  • Burnt, melted or collapsing - black icing, drips, deliberately imperfect. Looks genuinely good and reads as drama rather than bitterness.

  • The joke tier - a wedding-cake shape with the top tier removed. Subtly funny and photographs well.

Do you need a party to have a divorce cake?

Heck no, there’s never any need for an official reason to have cake! A divorce cake helps give a focal point to your divorce party, but you do not have to have a party to enjoy cake - whether it’s with your family, your besties, even giving a slice or two to your neighbours. Cakes are often used for marking milestones, and this milestone is yours to mark.

If you do want to make an occasion of it, we’ve got plenty of divorce party ideas.
