Divorce quotes: the best (and worst) things to say or write
Most divorce quote pages give you two hundred quotes. This is not going to be one of those, for three reasons: most of them say the same thing, a good number are misattributed, and a surprising proportion are actively bad advice dressed up in a nice font.
So here's a shorter, more useful version of your typical divorce quotes page. What to post, what to text, what to write in the card, and what to hold onto at four in the morning when you’re looking for a supportive divorce quote to get you through it.
And remember - our divorce support page contains helplines and more, if needed.
One-line divorce quotes
Sometimes less is more, and you don’t need pages of text to get your point across. Here are a couple of one line divorce quotes to help you get through it, or send a succinct and supportive message to someone in need.
"Well-behaved women seldom make history." Laurel Thatcher Ulrich, 1976
Despite popular belief, this quote doesn’t actually belong to Marilyn Monroe - but it is a rallying cry for a woman who is going through it. Sometimes a reminder that you don’t need to ‘play nice’ is what someone needs to give them the strength to get through their divorce.
It ended. You didn't.
This is a plain one liner divorce quote. It’s not attributable to anyone, but it could be exactly what someone needs to hear mid-divorce. Yes, their marriage has ended, but their life hasn’t, and it will get better.
This is temporary.
Again, a simple one-liner, but surprisingly effective. How sad they feel, how hard it might be - it’s all only temporary. The bad days do not last forever, and good times will begin again.
Divorce captions for Instagram
Sometimes an empowering social media post is what’s needed to make you feel better about yourself. These divorce quotes are perfect as social media captions:
New postcode. Same person, better lighting.
Turns out it wasn't the house.
Season two. Smaller cast.
I didn't lose half of anything. I kept all of myself.
Still here. Better decor.
The quiet is mine now.
Not starting over. Starting from experience.
Everything in this space is here because I chose it.
Divorce lines for a friend
If you’ve got a friend going through divorce, here are some helpful and supportive divorce quotes you can send their way:
I'm not going to ask how you are, but I am bringing dinner on Tuesday.
You don't have to explain it to me. Not now, not ever.
Whatever you decide, I'm on your side of it.
You're allowed to be relieved. You're allowed to be wrecked. Usually both before lunch.
I'm not going anywhere, and I'm not keeping score of how long this takes.
No advice. Just here for you.
Divorce quotes for 4am
These divorce quotes are for you, if you’re awake at four in the morning, wondering what could have been done differently:
This is the worst year. It is not the rest of your life.
You are not behind. There is no schedule for this.
Grief for a marriage is allowed, even when leaving was the right thing.
You can be certain you did the right thing and still be sad about it. Both are true at once.
The admin will end. It will.

Nobody else gets a vote on whether you're over it yet.
It is possible to miss someone you could not stay with.

Quotes for when divorce is finalised

A marriage ending is not a life failing.
Signed, sealed, and going out for dinner.
Twenty weeks, two orders, one very large gin.
Funny divorce quotes
These funny divorce quotes are ideal for someone who can see the humour in it, and is able to laugh about their divorce. They’re also great inspiration for decoration on a divorce cake.
Half the assets. All of the time.
I kept the good knives.
Getting married is expensive, but divorce even more so.
My ex has a very nice life and I hope it's somewhere else.
Reader, I un-married him.
The divorce quotes that do damage
Not all divorce quotes are created equally, and it’s really important to recognise that. Think about the person you’re saying or writing the quote to and how they’d feel. These divorce quotes often miss the mark, so it’s best to avoid them.
"Everything happens for a reason." It didn't. Some things are just bad luck, bad behaviour or bad timing, and insisting on a hidden purpose asks the person to find meaning in something that mostly needs surviving. This is the single most-shared divorce quote on the internet and it is the worst one.
Anything beginning "at least." At least you're still young. At least there were no children. At least it was quick. Every one of them minimises what they’re going through, and could hit a nerve you didn’t even know about.
Anything about revenge. "The best revenge is a life well lived" sounds like independence and is the opposite; it keeps the ex as the audience for everything you do next. The best life well lived is the one where they aren't watching.
"You'll find someone better." Possibly. Not the point, not yet, and not for anyone else to raise.
"You're so strong." Kindly meant, but it tells someone that falling apart would be the wrong thing to do.
Anything that makes it a lesson. A marriage ending is not a curriculum. Sometimes there's something to learn and sometimes there is simply a bad few years to be got through.
Three famous divorce quotes that aren't what you think
Quote pages copy each other and nobody checks the quotes they publish. These three are everywhere, on mugs and prints and pins, and the attributions are wrong.
"Well-behaved women seldom make history" is Laurel Thatcher Ulrich, in the journal American Quarterly, in 1976 - written when she was a student, in a scholarly article about Puritan women. It is routinely credited to Marilyn Monroe, Eleanor Roosevelt and Anne Boleyn, none of whom said it. The original word is seldom, not rarely and not never.
"Everything happens for a reason" gets attributed to Marilyn Monroe constantly, on a longer quote about things falling apart so better things can fall together. It can't be traced to her. Monroe is effectively the internet's lost-property office for unattributed quotes - the Marilyn Monroe fan community maintains a list of eighteen well-known ones that aren't hers.
Almost anything attributed to Marilyn Monroe. If a quote is on a pink background and credited to Monroe, assume it isn't until you've checked. She died in 1962. She did not write about self-care.
None of which makes a line less useful to you. It just means that if you're having it tattooed, check it first.
If you're going to use one
For a caption, shorter is better. Under ten words holds on a phone screen.
For a pin or a print, the line has to work with no context at all - no "after everything that's happened".
For a tattoo, live with it on paper for three months. The lines that feel most urgent in month one are rarely the ones you want at fifty.
And if you're posting it, remember who can see it. If there are children, they will read it eventually.
